Alcatel-Lucent and Institut Télécom Joint Laboratory

On 27 January 2009, Alcatel-Lucent and Institut Télécom inaugurated their joint research laboratory. The objective is to work on future applications in digital media.

Research into Ubiquitous Media

Today's digital society is characterized by the merging together of communication means, information materials and knowledge objects: the future will be one of ubiquitous media, a digital environment in which the individual is an information emitter, receiver and relay all at the same time. There is therefore a great need for continuity between ubiquitous communication - exchanging information everywhere and at all times - and the digital media handling these exchanges. The aim is therefore to create a dense, cognitive informational world which is always interconnected, and this is the vision being promoted by Institut Télécom and Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs.

The laboratory's activities are organized in the form of inter-connected "research projects". The first four projects have been selected and others will be added to them later.

A multi-disciplinary team

Yann Gasté and Françoise Prêteux will be managing the joint laboratory

This virtual laboratory has 64 researchers, some world-renowned, specializing in engineering sciences (networks, service architecture, security, semantic mining...) and social and human sciences, plus one third of young researchers (PhD students, engineers and postgraduates) recruited specifically for the project. There will be a dual management team with Yann Gasté from Alcatel-Lucent in charge of operations, and Françoise Prêteux from Institut Télécom appointed as Scientific Director.
