Institut Telecom hosts and supervises some 700 PhD students (of which 10 % on Industrial contracts for training through research) in its laboratories situated in the Ile de France, Brittany, Nord and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
The doctoral and post-doctoral students work in the doctoral schools which group together the Institut Telecom's state of the art laboratories and prestigious universities such as Paris 6 and Rennes 1.
Admission to doctoral program is open to holders of a Post graduate advanced diploma or an equivalent diploma following authorisation by the director of the doctoral school.
The institute's schools issue PHD diploma :
• on its own for Telecom ParisTech (EDITE doctoral school founded jointly with Pierre et Marie Curie Paris 6 University)
• jointly with universities for :
→ Telecom Bretagne (Matisse doctoral school, SMIS doctoral school, Multidisciplinary doctoral school),
→ Telecom SudParis and Telecom Business School (EDITE and SMPC doctoral schools, SITEVRY doctoral school, SSTO doctoral school).
In addition, the subsidiaries have also signed partnerships with doctoral schools :
→ EURECOM with EDITE, the STIC doctoral school (Nice-Sophia Antipolis university) and the Doctoral Progam in IT, communications & information (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne)
→ Telecom Lille1 with SPI doctoral school (Lille 1 university).
In addition to the research conducted under the direction of qualified professors, doctoral students receive specific training from the doctoral schools.
The work carried out is published and culminates in the writing of a thesis for which there is a public viva (in the US, defends) in front of a jury of experts during the 3rd year (totalling 8 years of higher education). This leads to the awarding of a PHD.
In addition, the Institut's doctoral training courses provide further preparation for the research professions and for the business world, notably company creation.
There are many financing sources. Doctoral and post-doctoral students can be funded by :
→ French or
international grants,
→ research contracts financed by French and
European agencies or by companies, or by the funds of the Institut or
the Fondation Telecom.
Certain students are also taken on directly by companies in the framework of CIFRE contracts (industrial research training conventions). More about the CIFRE
