1844 Electric telegraph is incorporated into the telegraphic lines Administration
1873 Merger of the post and telegraphs with the Post and Telegraphs Administration
1878 Creation of the École Supérieure de Télégraphie (EST) by the Post and Telegraphs Administration
1888 The Ecole Supérieure de Télégraphie becomes the Ecole Professionnelle Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (or Professional School of Post and Telegraphs) (EPSPT)
1889 Nationalisation of the telephone network
1904 Invention of the word 'telecommunication' by Edouard Estaunié, director of the EPSPT
1912 The Ecole Professionnelle Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (EPSPT) becomes the Ecole Supérieure des Postes et Télégraphes (ESPT)
1916 Creation of the 'service d'études et de recherche techniques' or technological studies and research department (SERT)
1941 Creation of the Direction Générale des Télécommunications (DGT), or Government Telecommunications Department
1942 The ESPT splits into two distinct entities:
- the ENSPTT for administrative higher education
- the ENST (which became Télécom Paris) for technical training of engineers. The school is managed by the Direction Supérieure des Enseignements (DSE) of the DGT.
1944 Creation of the interministerial research center CNET (National Center for Telecommunication Studies)
1977 Creation of ENST Bretagne
1979 The Institut National des Cadres Techniques (National Institute of Technical Managers) becomes the National Telecommunications Institute (INT)
1988-1990 Creation of associate bodies (Théséus, ENIC now Télécom Lille 1, Eurécom)
1990 Separation of post and telecoms (the DGT becomes France Télécom) and end of state monopoly
1996 France Télécom, the public operator, becomes a private-law limited liability company.
1996

Following the privatisation of France Télécom, The Groupe des écoles des télécommunications (Telecommunications Schools Group) is created by the Government, on 27 December 1996, as a replacement for the operator in the management of the 3 telecommunications schools.

2008 The Telecommunications Schools Group (GET) changes its name to become Institut Télécom.
June 2008 2 associate school agreements signed with the ISTASE (now TELECOM Saint-Etienne) and ENSPS.
January 2010 An associate school agreement with ENSEIRB-MATMECA located in Bordeaux
September 2011 2 associate school agreements signed with ENSIIE in Evry and ESIAL in Nancy
