GET celebrates its 10th anniversary !

In 2007, GET celebrates its 10th anniversary, although it boasts a history of over a century, marked with the invention in 1904 of the word telecommunication by Édouard Estaunié, then director of what ultimately resulted in the creation of GET's schools.

As a celebration of this event, GET organized a conference, held on Friday 29 June 2007 at the Palais Iéna in Paris, open to all its partners and focusing on the theme of Knowledge Society and Digital Life: meaning, challenges and the future, together with the presentation of a Green Paper on this issue.

A major player in higher education and research in the field of ICST

In 1997, when France Télécom became a partially privatized company, GET was founded as an administrative state institution (under the supervision of the Minister for telecommunication), in order to maintain a strong public-sector system providing higher education in the field of telecommunications.

For Pascal Faure, Chairman of GET's Board of Directors and Vice-President of the Information technologies departmental council: "In 10 years, GET has developed remarkably. The Group, made up of Télécom Paris, ENST Bretagne, Télécom INT, INT Management within INT and two subsidiaries Télécom Lille 1 and Eurécom, has become a major player in the fields of education and research in Information and Communication Science and Technology (ICST)".

Teaching which moves with the times but which still stands out for excellence

Each year, GET's schools rank high in the French press league tables.
Since 1997, the schools have issued 8615 engineering and management qualifications.
In order to meet the requirements of a globalized educational context, GET has developed international training courses requiring a high level of expertise and specialization as well as graduate programs: 183 Masters of Science have been granted since the qualification was offered for the first time in 2003.
Today, 35% of students attending the schools are from abroad. Around forty nationalities are present on the various campuses.
Engineering diplomas can be obtained through apprenticeships in 2 Group schools, Télécom Lille 1 and, more recently, ENST Bretagne.
To meet the needs of companies, Télécom Paris and INT offer the Graduate School Aptitude Assessment (Bilan d'aptitude délivré par les Grandes Écoles - BADGE, label created in 2001 by the Conférence des Grandes Écoles) as part of life-long learning programs, which includes part-time training courses for applicants with prior experience.
GET has been validating professional experience since the beginning of 2007. It enables experienced managers to obtain a diploma by presenting their achievements to a jury.

Buoyant research growth, focusing on innovation and technology transfer

After its creation, GET rapidly organized its research activity by displaying strong development objectives.
In March 2006, GET obtained the Carnot label which is awarded for high quality research through partnerships. As of the first year, the Carnot contribution totaled €1.4 million to support and encourage research initiatives under contract.
GET had 696 doctoral students at the end of 2006, as against 436 in 1997, i.e. a 59% increase. This figure is proof of GET's appeal at a time when a loss of interest in scientific careers can be observed.
International science awards are also a prime example of excellence. Among the many accolades awarded to GET's professors, the prestigious Marconi Prize was awarded to Claude Berrou in 2005 for work on turbocodes.
GET strongly supports technology transfer as part of its partnerships with major companies and SMEs and also by providing assistance to the start-ups received in its incubators. GET has supported the creation of 200 companies since 2000.
The dissemination of scientific knowledge is also an important role for the Group which also carries out publishing operations. Annals of Telecommunications, journal listed by the ISI, and the Technological and Scientific Telecommunications Collection (CTST) are both well-renowned publications on the international and national stages.

Knowledge Society and Digital Life: meaning, challenges and the future

This conference, which was held on Friday 29 June 2007 at the Palais Iéna in Paris, displayed the variety of GET's research fields. The discussions, centered around the subjects of the Green Paper, concerned knowledge economy, digital social cohesion, virtual territories, and the cognitive development of human beings.
